WHY SAFFRON
Significance of Saffron in Kashi
Varanasi took me by surprise by its "where ever you go, you see Saffron" sort of visual. For one, the name of the color Saffron is as old as the year 1200 and Saffron is a delightfully coloured, powdered or thin-stranded spice in the kitchen. But more significantly, with respect to Religion this is what I found interesting: In Sanatan Dharma or Hinduism), the deep saffron color is associated with sacrifice, religious abstinence, quest for light and salvation. Saffron or "Bhagwa" is the most sacred color for the Hindus and is oftenworn by Sanyasis or Sadhus, who have left their home in search of the ultimate truth.
